Blaptica dubia 'Dubia Roaches'
Native to Central and South America, Dubia roaches are one of the most popular feeder insects due to their high nutritional value. When picking housing options for your Dubias, we recommend using plastic tubs with smooth sides and vented lids to prevent any climbers from escaping. The standard minimum tank size for Dubias is 10 gallons. While most keepers recommend housing Dubias on paper towels or on bare bottom tanks, we find they much prefer an enclosure with substrate to burrow in. We provide our Dubias with approximately 4 inches of substrate, leaf litter, and stacked cork bark to hide in. Temperature requirements for this species vary depending on your goal. If you are looking to set up a breeding colony, we recommend using a small heating pad to raise the enclosure temperature to approximately 90 degrees fahrenheit. If breeding is not desired, a standard room temperature enclosure will suffice. Lastly, good nutrition is key when keeping Dubia roaches, especially if you intend on using them for feeders. We recommend you provide your Dubias with a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, grains and starch such as oats and potatoes, and a sufficient calcium source. We advise caution when providing your Dubias with protein as high protein foods such as dog or cat food and meat can lead to excess protein being converted into uric acid, which can be harmful to the reptiles or amphibians that eat them. Additionally, be sure to remove any foods before they get moldy as mold is highly lethal to roach colonies. Adult length:~4 cm, Humidity preferences: 60%, Temperature preferences: 70-95 degrees, Soil depth: ~4 in.
