Porcellio Scaber, also known as the rough backed isopod due to the coarse, bumpy texture of their carapace, is an extremely hardy species. The perfect choice for beginners, these isopods are native to Europe and are quick to breed with moderately sized broods. The calico mutation featured in this group however is a uniquely US mutation and is typically sex linked, with males presenting little to no calico pattern but carrying the mutation on the x chromosome (so don’t worry if a grey male pops up in your colony!)
